Travel protection
Two different things protect a trip, and people mix them up constantly. One is about us going bust. The other is about your holiday going wrong.
Financial protection — included
Covers the failure of a company: ours, or an airline or supplier in your trip. It means your money is not lost and you are not stranded abroad. It comes with your booking and costs you nothing extra.

What is coveredTravel insurance — yours to arrange
Covers what happens to you: illness, cancellation, hospital treatment abroad, lost baggage, a missed connection. Financial protection does none of this, and it is where almost every expensive travel story ends up.
You buy this separately, and you should buy it on the day you book — not the week you fly.
Book with us and be financially protected
Many of the flights and flight-inclusive holidays on this website are financially protected by the ATOL scheme. But ATOL protection does not apply to all holidays and travel services listed on this website. Please ask us to confirm what protection may apply to your booking.
If you do not receive an ATOL Certificate, the booking is not ATOL protected. If you do receive an ATOL Certificate but all the parts of your trip are not listed on it, those parts are not ATOL protected.
See our booking conditions for more information, or read about the ATOL Certificate at atol.org.uk/ATOLCertificate.
What to check before you buy a policy
The five things people discover too late. We do not sell insurance — this is just what to look for.
Medical cover limit
Look for millions, not thousands. An air ambulance home from a long-haul destination can run well into six figures.
Pre-existing conditions
You must declare them, including ones that feel irrelevant. An undeclared condition can void the whole policy, not just that claim.
Cancellation cover
This is why you buy on booking day. Cover from the day you buy protects the money you have already committed.
The right region
European policies do not cover the USA, and "worldwide" sometimes excludes it too. Check the destination is listed.
What you plan to do
Skiing, diving, quad bikes and even some hiking altitudes are excluded as standard and need an add-on.
Missed departure & delay
Covers getting you to the trip if you miss it, which airline compensation rules do not.
We do not sell or advise on travel insurance
Arranging and advising on insurance is a regulated activity in the UK. The list above is general information, not a recommendation and not advice about any particular policy. Buy from an FCA-authorised insurer or broker, and read the policy wording rather than the summary.
Also worth doing before you fly
- Check the FCDO advice for your destination. Travelling against it can invalidate your insurance — see travel advice.
- Check passport validity rules. Many countries require six months beyond your return date. See visa requirements.
- Carry the policy number, not the policy. Save the emergency assistance number to your phone and give it to whoever is travelling with you.
- Know your passenger rights. If a flight is delayed or cancelled, the airline owes you things before insurance is involved — see passenger rights.
Ask us what protects your booking
We will tell you which scheme applies before you pay a penny.
